At the beginning of your driving test you will be asked two routine ‘show me tell me’ questions about the safety and maintenance of your vehicle.
Your instructor will show you where to find all the places on your test car that you may need to show the examiner but you will need to memorise the answers to these questions.
- Open the bonnet and show where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
- Open the bonnet and show where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
- Open the bonnet and show where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
- Open the bonnet and show where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
- Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working.
- Tell me where you would find the infomation for the recommended tyre pressures and how tyre pressures should be checked.
- Tell me how you would check the brakes before starting a journey.
- Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
- Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
- Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti lock braking system.
- Show me how you would check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.
- Show me how you would set the de - mister controls to clear all the windows effectively.
- Show me how you would check that the horn is working.
- Show me how you would check the handbrake for excessive wear.
- Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
- Show me how you would check that the indicators are working.
- Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
- Show me how you would switch from headlights to main beam and explain how you would know that they are on whilst in the car.
- Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
The Show me Tell me test is quite straight forward but you need to ensure that you know the answers to all the above questions.
